AGM Batteries - Designed to Last

Sealed Lead Acid AGM Batteries are safer, more durable, and maintenance free. These state-of-the-art batteries from UPG produce high cranking amps, along with lower self-discharge and vibration resistance. AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery design requires no water additions and can be operated in any position and inclose proximity to people and sensitive equipment. These batteries are perfect for use with alternative energy equipment such as solar panels, wind turbines, hydro-electric units, etc.

AGM Batteries?

These batteries are called AGM for Absorbed Glass Matt. There are common 'wet' batteries, improved 'gel' batteries, and then a class apart are the AGM. This type uses fiberglass materials inside to hold conductive liquids, allowing batteries to store charges more effectively and giving them more durability and longer life. Also called "starved electrolyte" or "dry", because the fiberglass mat is only 95% saturated with conductive liquid and there is no excess.

Environmentally this means less toxic chemicals are used in the battery, and there can be no spilling of dangerous acids if the battery is damaged. Technically this means the excess liquid inside cannot freeze or dry up, so the battery stays alive for a long time of strong service, despite most interaction with weather conditions. And since the internal resistance is extremely low, there is almost no heating of the battery even under heavy charge and discharge currents. Also withstands shock and vibration.

AGM's have a very low self-discharge - from 1% to 3% per month is usual. This means that they can sit in storage for much longer periods without charging. No maintenance - typical 'wet' batteries require water to be added, because they use it up over time, but AGM's are carefree. Certainly the superior battery choice.

Battery Capacity?

The capacity of a battery is measured in Amp-hours (Ah) and is specified at a 20 hour rate. For example a 200 Ah battery operates at a discharge rate of 10 Amps for 20 hours. If the battery is operated at a higher discharge rate, it will produce less than the rated capacity.
